The mentorship and encouragement of
teachers transformed my life. I was born in Cambodia
to Chinese parents who emigrated to the U.S. By the
time I reached sixth grade in Los Angeles, I was struggling.
But with the help of the Fulfillment Fund, I changed my
future, becoming a magnet student at Cleveland High; an
Economics graduate from the prestigious
Haverford College;
and more importantly, a lifelong learner. I was featured on
a KNBC program entitled, "Beating the Odds," and I volunteer
for the
Fulfillment Fund, giving back the gifts that they so
graciously gave to me. It was a natural choice to become a
classroom teacher – to model my life after those I most
respected.
At the end of my second year of
teaching, my alma mater Cleveland HS recruited me to teach
math. While I like math, I LOVE, and have a degree in,
economics. But, the LAUSD said I could not teach economics
without a history degree. I realized that I loved teaching
but disliked bureaucracy. I was at a crossroads.
After months of reflection, I decided
to continue teaching, but in an autonomous environment.
Financial planning was my calling. Almost 10 years
later, I am still living my dream doing what I LOVE.
I'm lucky and appreciative of where I am.
